Hastings Water Works values our lifeguards beyond measure. They are the core of our aquatics team. We work hard to provide them with the best possible working environments. We are firmly committed to ensuring the safety and peace of mind of our staff and our clients and their families who enjoy the aquatic facilities we manage. Our ongoing in-service programs offer multiple opportunities every week for continuous training to help our guards to improve their skills.
Focused Lifeguards
We value our lifeguards and do everything we can to ensure their safety and comfort while working. With just a few rare exceptions, our lifeguards work four hour shifts, on average. In most cases, our guards are on active duty 45 minutes out of every hour, with 15 minute safety breaks before the top of each hour. This ensures they have ample time to use the bathroom, take a break, cool off, and relax to be focused for the next 45 minutes on duty. Because the work is usually outside and in hot weather, when on active duty, they’re required to have water with them to stay hydrated, and we urge them to use umbrellas when in the chair, wear a hat, use sunscreen, and wear sunglasses – all for their own wellbeing and safety. They’re also allowed a brief immersion in the pool for a quick chill when on a safety break.
Scheduling Is About Safety
Lifeguard staffing and schedules are adjusted weekly – even daily – throughout the season to meet the appropriate staffing needs for safety as the weather changes, the season progresses, and patron pool use fluctuates. We strive to not overstaff with too many lifeguards and waste our clients’ money, but our goal is to always ensure safety comes first – with no exception, which sometimes means two or three lifeguards are assigned to a pool instead of the usual solo guard at many facilities.
